Bassey reveals why he didn't give his shirt to an Ajax fan after UCL debut against Rangers
Published: September 09, 2022Calvin Bassey has explained why he didn't give his shirt to an Ajax Amsterdam fan after Wednesday evening's Champions League match at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
The Nigeria international made his Champions League debut against his old club Rangers and made it two assists in as many games when he set up Ajax's third goal scored by Mohammed Kudus.
Bassey was nervous when the game started but didn't allow the pressure get to him and helped the Amsterdam club post their fourth straight clean sheet in all competitions.
The fans played a part in Ajax's win, backing the Dutch champions throughout the match, but Bassey couldn't repay the love shown by the supporters by giving one of them his shirt.
Speaking to Ajax TV, Bassey said : "It was amazing. They were lively, they were singing obviously, so it's always best when you are winning as well. They give you like a buzz of energy as well to carry on going.
"The atmosphere is what makes football. As much as we play football the fans are the ones that make football.
"It was sinking that you've made your Champions League debut and it's one I'll never forget because obviously it was against my old club but at the same time it was a special night for me.
"Someone asked for my shirt but it's my first Champions League shirt so I think that's going in the frame not to anyone. So I'm keeping this one, I'm putting it in the frame. "
Bassey joined Ajax Amsterdam in July 2022 for a fee that could rise to 26.5 million euros, making him the most expensive Nigerian defender in history and a record sale for Rangers.
