Lampard reveals why Super Eagles midfielder started Everton's defeat to Southampton
Published: January 14, 2023
Manager Frank Lampard has provided an explanation for Alex Iwobi making the starting lineup in his side's 2-1 loss to Southampton in a Premier League game on Saturday evening.
The defeat means Everton have now lost their last four Premier League games at home and have the same number of points (15) as West Ham and Southampton who occupy the other relegation spots.
Iwobi wasn't supposed to be on the Goodison Park pitch for the visit of the Saints after suffering an ankle ligament injury in the second half of the FA Cup third round clash with Manchester United about a week ago.
The injury had an initial prognosis of three weeks out but the central midfielder made a miraculous recovery, paving the way for him to be in contention for the visit of Southampton.
Lampard revealed that his number 17 was eager to face Southampton after passing a late fitness on Saturday morning.
On Iwobi being available for the Southampton game, Lampard told Everton's official website : "Alex Iwobi has proven his fitness.
"Had a great week himself which shows how professional he is – he was desperate to be involved in this game. "
Although Everton are struggling at the moment, Iwobi has been one of their best players in the current season with seven goal involvements in twenty two appearances across all competitions.
