Nigeria v Gabon: Ndidi v Lemina and two other key duels that could decide WCQ playoff

As Nigeria prepare to face Gabon in Thursday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff in Rabat, attention is shifting toward the individual contests that could determine the outcome.

Both nations boast star names and tactical discipline, but three head-to-head duels stand out as potentially decisive.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang v Calvin Bassey

Veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains Gabon’s talisman and biggest attacking threat. His experience and movement across the front line could trouble the Nigerian defence, especially during transitions.

However, Fulham defender Calvin Bassey, known for his athleticism and strong one-on-one defending, will be tasked with containing the Marseille forward.

The duel will test Bassey’s concentration and positioning against a player capable of scoring from half-chances.

Wilfred Ndidi v Mario Lemina

The midfield battle between Wilfred Ndidi and Mario Lemina could define the rhythm of the match.

Ndidi, Nigeria’s anchorman, provides balance and defensive cover while initiating counter-attacks with his passing range.

Lemina, on the other hand, is Gabon’s metronome, dictating tempo and driving play through central areas. Whoever controls the middle of the park will likely hand their side the initiative.

Victor Osimhen v Loyce Mbaba

Nigeria’s prolific striker Victor Osimhen will lead the line once again, bringing power, pace, and an eye for goal.

Standing in his way is Gabon goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba, who faces one of the sternest tests of his career.

Osimhen’s ability to exploit spaces and Mbaba’s composure under pressure could define both teams’ fortunes in Rabat.

With a place in the World Cup group stage at stake, these three duels—spanning defence, midfield, and attack—may ultimately decide who takes a giant leap toward qualification for the 2026 finals.
