Chukwueze equals Messi's dribbling record set in Barcelona's 3-2 win v Real Madrid in 2017
Published: April 10, 2023
Everything indicates that Samuel Chukwueze is in contention to be named in La Liga's Team of the Week after putting in arguably his best performance in a Villarreal shirt as the Yellow Submarine came from behind to defeat European champions Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, April 8.
The Nigeria international came up with two fabulous goals to help Villarreal clinch a 3-2 victory over Los Blancos.
In doing so, Chukwueze emulated Argentina captain Lionel Messi who also scored twice as Barcelona came from behind to beat Real Madrid 3-2 at the Santiago Bernabéu on April 23, 2017.
But that is not the whole story. The 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup winner registered seven successful dribbles in his King of the Match display against Real Madrid.
According to the statisticians at OPTA, Chukwueze became the first player to complete seven dribbles in a La Liga match against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu since Lionel Messi completed seven take-ons in April 2017.
In terms of success rate, Chukwueze outperformed Messi as he was successful with 87.5 percent of his dribbles while the Argentine had a dribbling accuracy of 63.64 percent.
The Super Eagles winger has registered 24 goal involvements (13 goals, 11 assists) in 40 outings across all competitions this season.
