Chelsea's 119th birthday: Top five Nigerian players to represent 'The Pride of London'

Today, March 10th, 2024, marks a momentous occasion for Chelsea Football Club – their 119th birthday!

As the Blues celebrate their rich history, it's a perfect opportunity to recognize the contributions of international players who have donned the famous cobalt blue jersey.

Today, allnigeriasoccer.com looks to shine a light on five exceptional Nigerian footballers who have left their mark on Chelsea Football Club.

1. John Obi Mikel

Undoubtedly the most decorated Nigerian to play for Chelsea, Obi Mikel was a mainstay in the Blues' midfield for over a decade.

Arriving as a teenager in 2006, Mikel's tenacity and tactical intelligence saw him become a key part of Chelsea's golden era.

He lifted the Premier League trophy twice, the Champions League and Europa League once, and numerous other domestic titles during his time at Stamford Bridge.

2. Celestine Babayaro

A dynamic left-back known for his pace and attacking prowess, Celestine Babayaro was part of Chelsea's squad in the late 1990s.

Signed in 1997 after impressing at Anderlecht, Babayaro quickly established himself as a fan favorite. His overlapping runs and pinpoint crosses were a constant threat to opposition defenses.

While his time at Chelsea came with stiff competition in his playing position, Babayaro's contributions to the team's UEFA Champions League run in 1999-2000 as well as the FA Cup triumph in 2000 should not be forgotten.

3. Victor Moses

A versatile player comfortable in both defense and attack, Victor Moses enjoyed a successful spell at Chelsea in the 2012/13 season, contributing to their UEFA Europa League title win.

After further loan spells at other clubs in Turkey, Italy and England, he returned to Chelsea permanently in 2016 and became a key figure in another Premier League title win under Antonio Conte.

Moses' ability to adapt to different roles and his tireless work ethic made him a valuable asset for the Blues during his time at the club.

4. Eddie Newton

A true Chelsea legend, Eddie Newton's story is interwoven with the club's history. Born in England to a Nigerian father, Newton was a midfielder with an eye for goal.

A product of the Chelsea academy, Newton rose through the ranks to the first team and went on to make 201 appearances for the club.

Newton's skill and creativity helped Chelsea win the FA Cup in 1997 scoring the second goal which proved to be decisive against Middlesbrough in the final.

5. Lesley Ugochukwu

Though his time is still formative at Chelsea given the fact that he joined the club from Rennes last summer, Lesley Ugochukwu's potential is undeniable.

The young midfielder, born in France to Nigerian Parents, is currently a youth international for his country of birth at U21 level.

Ugochukwu's resolute and imposing nature in midfield is something that Pochettino will hope to utilise to the peak. While currently injured, he has managed to make 13 appearances in all competitions this season.

As Chelsea celebrates its 119th birthday, the club looks forward to continuing its tradition of attracting world-class players, regardless of nationality.

With Nigeria boasting a rich pool of young talent currently in their ranks, Blues fans might just see the next Nigerian star emerge from their academy in the not-too-distant future.
