Tottenham fend off interest from Man Utd to tie down hot Nigerian prospect to a new deal
Published: March 13, 2024
Tottenham Hotspur reportedly fought off interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United to tie down hot Lambeth-born Nigerian midfielder Callum Olusesi to a new contract.
According to Football Insider, Olusesi attracted interest from the likes of Manchester United, Newcastle United, Leeds United and Brighton & Hove but the Lilywhites moved to fend off that interest by handing him a scholarship before tying him down to his first professional contract this week.
Now 17, the versatile midfielder put pen to paper to a pro contract at Tottenham on Monday, a deal that will keep him at the north London club until at least the end of the 2025-2026 season.
Olusesi is highly thought of by Tottenham Hotspur's coaching staff, having made his debuts in the UEFA Youth League, U18 Premier League and U18 Premier League Cup in his final season as a schoolboy.
In the current season, the 17-year-old has demonstrated his versatility, playing in more advanced positions, including center forward and attacking midfield in some games.
He has been in fine goal-scoring form this term, mustering nine goals combined in the U18 Premier League, FA Youth Cup and U18 Premier League Cup.
Callum Olusesi is the second Nigerian player to sign a professional contract with Tottenham since the start of the campaign, following in the footsteps of U18s teammate Damola Ajayi.
He became provisionally cap-tied to his country of birth England in November 2023 when he started for the Young Lions in a 2024 European U17 Championship qualifying match against Faroe Islands.
