2003 African Games star wants his American-English-Nigerian son, Wolves RB Okoduwa to choose Nigeria
Published: March 13, 2024
Emmanuel Okoduwa, one of the standout players for Nigeria U23s at the 2003 African Games, is hoping his son, Wolverhampton Wanderers right-back Wesley Okoduwa will pledge his international future to three-time African champions, Nigeria.
The younger Okoduwa is spoiled for choice over the national team to represent at senior level but at the moment, it is widely believed the English Football Association are ahead of their two other rivals in the race for his services having already capped him at U16 level.
Last month, the defender was in the Young Lions squad that won the Football Federations Cup triumph, playing in games against the U16 national teams of Saudi Arabia, Sweden and South Korea during the tournament in Spain.
Wesley also qualifies to play for Nigeria through his father and the United States where he was born,
He was on the cusp of making history as the youngest player to represent Wolves first team in a competitive game on March 2 when he was named in the matchday squad against Newcastle United in the Premier League but didn't earn minutes during the game at St. James' Park
Asked to clarify on the international future of Wesley, Emmanuel Okoduwa told AFRIK-FOOT NG last week: "If you ask me if I want him to represent Nigeria then I'd definitely say yes but ultimately the choice is with him.
"When the time comes he will pick where his international future lies but as a father, I want him to play for Nigeria just like I did."
Former Shakhtar Donetsk and Arsenal Kyiv striker Emmanuel Okoduwa played a crucial role as Nigeria won the silver medal at the 2003 African Games, scoring against South Africa and Senegal in the group stage.
