Penalty or no penalty? Rangers great Ally McCoist has his say on incident involving Dessers
Published: March 15, 2024
Rangers all-time top scorer Ally McCoist has given his verdict on whether Cyriel Dessers should have had a penalty during the Light Blues' UEFA Europa League second-leg tie against Benefica at Ibrox Stadium on Thursday.
In the 53rd minute of the game, Rangers' right-back and skipper James Tavernier delivered a cross into the Benefica box but the ball ricocheted off the knee of Antonio Silva for a corner kick.
However, Dessers protested to the referee Ivan Kruzliak, that he had been held by Silva and that a penalty should be given in his favor but his complaint was neglected.
Speaking about the incident, McCoist said as much as the Super Eagles can complain about an infringement, the same can be said that he was doing the same for the defender.
"It's six and two threes between Dessers and the defender, but it's certainly enough to concern the defender." he told TNT via TBR
A goal in the 66th minute by Rafa Silva gave Benefica the victory in the contest which meant that they have advanced to the quarterfinal at the expense of Rangers with a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.
Dessers made seven appearances in the Europa League before the Light Blues got knocked out of the competition and could only manage a goal and an assist.
