Profitability and Sustainability Rules breach: Nottingham Forest may be forced to sell Awoniyi this summer
Published: March 20, 2024
Nottingham Forest might part company with some of their key players, including Taiwo Awoniyi, to prevent another breach of Premier League financial regulations.
According to The Daily Mail UK, Nottingham Forest face a battle to keep key centre-back Murillo as the club face a summer of major uncertainty.
As per the report, apart from Murillo, Morgan Gibbs-White and Awoniyi are also expected to attract interest from other clubs in the summer.
Nottingham Forest have been sanctioned with an immediate deduction of points for breaching the Profitability and Sustainability Rules of the Premier League following the decision of an Independent Commission, and as a result of the the deduction, the two-time European champions find themselves in the relegation zone nine matches to the end of the 2023-2024 season.
This same season and for the same reasons, breaching the Financial Fair Play rules of the Premier League, Everton were sanctioned in November with a deduction of 10 points, which in February was reduced to 6.
The Reds face the prospect of having to offload players by the end of the season to ensure their revenue matches expenditure.
Nottingham Forest signed Awoniyi from Union Berlin in June 2022 for a then club record fee of 20 million euros but not all the money went to the Bundesliga outfit as Liverpool inserted a sell-on clause into the deal taking him to the the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
Awoniyi's six goals in his last four matches of the 2022-2023 campaign helped Nottingham Forest avoid relegation and he has scored another six goals this term despite struggling with injuries.
The 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup winner is under contract with Nottingham Forest until June 30, 2027.
