Arsenal's brand new professional Nwaneri reaches double digits in goals for England at U17 level
Published: March 21, 2024
Arsenal attacking midfielder of Nigerian descent, Ethan Nwaneri sparkled as the Young Lions began the elite round of the 2024 European U17 Championship qualifiers with a convincing 5-1 win over Northern Ireland at St George's Park on Wednesday, March 20.
Nwaneri is the latest professional player in the ranks of Arsenal as he is celebrating his seventeenth birthday today, March 21.
As per Premier League rules, all players in their U17 year are required to start the 2023-2024 season on a scholarship agreement, before they are permitted to sign a first professional football contract on or after their 17th birthday.
Last summer, the talented Anglo-Nigerian player committed his future to the Gunners by agreeing two new deals, signing a scholarship which will be converted into a professional contract upon reaching 17 years of age in March 2024.
Against Northern Ireland, Nwaneri doubled the Young Lions advantage with a classy finish after he was found by captain Christopher Rigg.
With his 63rd minute goal, the Hale End Academy product reached double figures in goals for England at U17 level.
The brand new Arsenal professional, a member of the Young Lions squad to the 2023 Fifa U17 World Cup, has been able to reach ten goals after twenty-two matches for England U17s.
it is worthy of being noted that nine of the ten goals netted by Nwaneri were in competitive matches, including seven in Euro qualifying.
The Hale End Academy graduate formally became provisionally cap-tied to England in October 2022 when he came off the bench to make his competitive debut for the Young Lions in an U17 Euro qualifier.
