Newcastle United's Nigeria-eligible forward becomes provisionally cap-tied to England
Published: March 23, 2024Talented Newcastle United forward of Nigerian descent, Trevan Sanusi became provisionally cap-tied to England on Saturday evening with his appearance off the bench in a 2024 European U17 Championship qualifier against Hungary at St. George's Park - Pitch 6 Burton-on-Trent, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Should he decide to represent the Nigerian national teams in the future, Sanusi has to apply for a change of association.
Having remained rooted to the bench in the Young Lions' 5-1 win over Northern Ireland on March 20, the Magpies youth teamer made his competitive debut for the England youth teams when he replaced Joshua King in the 81st minute in today's match with Hungary,
The 16-year-old had played in friendly matches for England at U15, U16 and U17 levels before his first competitive appearance for the 2017 Fifa U17 World Cup champions.
Sanusi made his full debuts for Birmingham City's U18s and development squad while still a schoolboy which is a testament to his incredible quality.
Since landing at Newcastle United last summer, he has scored in the U18 Premier League, Premier League 2 and FA Youth Cup.
Meanwhile, Sanusi's international teammate Ethan Nwaneri continued his brilliant form for club and country by getting on the score sheet for the Young Lions in their 5-0 win over Hungary.
Three key members of Nigeria's squad to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations - Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina and Ademola Lookman - represented England youth teams before switching allegiances to Nigeria where their parents originally hail from.
