Nwaneri battles White, Havertz, Trossard, 5 others for Arsenal GOTM; omitted from squad v Luton
Published: April 03, 2024Anglo-Nigerian midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has been nominated for Arsenal's Goal of the Month for March alongside eight other players.
The 17-year-old's brilliant goal for the Gunners' development side against Chelsea in a Premier League 2 fixture at the Kingsmeadow has been chosen as one of the most outstanding goals scored last month.
In the 64th minute of the encounter, the England youth international showed outstanding footwork to dribble past three defenders before picking the bottom right corner to give Mehmet Ali's side a two-goal cushion.
He is set to slug it out with James Sweet's goal against Chelsea U21s, Ben White's left footed effort for the first team against Sheffield United, Frida Maanum's long ranger for the Women's side versus Aston Villa and Kai Havertz's header in the Premier League clash with Brentford.
Also nominated were Leandro Trossard's finish against Porto, Theo Julienne's solo run for the U18s versus Crystal Palace, Lotte Wubben-Moy's effort for the Women's side against Aston Villa and Stina Blackstenius' extra time winner for the Ladies.
It was another impressive month for Nwaneri who signed a new contract with Arsenal and also helped the development side secure a vital point against Tottenham on the stoppage time in a league game played at the Meadow Park besides his goal against the Blues.
Nwaneri was pictured training with Arsenal first teamers in their final workout before the Premier League clash against relegation-threatened Luton Town at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Hale End Academy product has been omitted from the gameday squad to face the Hatters as manager Mikel Arteta has opted for Emile Smith-Rowe, Martin Ødegaard, Reiss Nelson, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard as the attack-minded players in the starting lineup, with Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah on the bench.
Nwaneri has received six call-ups for first team games so far this season, including three in the UEFA Champions League.
