Published: April 07, 2024
Victor Osimhen returned to scoring ways as Napoli thrashed AC Monza 4-2 at the U-Power Stadium - Brianteo in a Serie A clash o Sunday, April 7.
The Nigeria international fired blanks in 443 minutes of action spread across six games before ending his goal drought against the Biancorossi.
Monza took the lead in the first half through Milan Djuric, who powered home a header past a stranded Alex Meret.
The encounter lived up to its billing in the second half, with Napoli netting four goals in a pulsating 13-minutes.
Osimhen, who had been enduring a frustrating run in front of goal since scoring against Sassuolo in late February, restored parity for the he Parthenopeans in the 55th minute with a towering header that left him needing medical attention after landing awkwardly.
Napoli, however, were not to be deterred by their star striker's discomfort as just two minutes later, substitute Matteo Politano sent the traveling supporters into raptures with a stunning goal shortly after entering the fray.
The lead was further extended in the 61st minute through Piotr Zieliński, but Monza refused to lie down and halved the deficit almost immediately thanks to a delightful curler from Andrea Colpani.
The goal frenzy finally came to an end in the 68th minute when another substitute, Giacomo Raspadori, put the game beyond doubt.
Osimhen's goal will come as a huge relief for Napoli manager Francesco Calzona as the 25-year-old had failed to score in his previous four consecutive matches before the trip to Monza.
His return to the scoresheet will be a welcome boost for Napoli as they continue their push for European places.
Today's strike saw the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup winner take his league tally to twelve in nineteen appearances so far this term.
