U18 PL: Five-goal hero Obi-Martin equals Arsenal record for most goals scored by a schoolboy in a season
Published: April 13, 2024
Denmark U17 international of Nigerian descent Chido Obi-Martin continued his rich vein of form in the U18 Premier League as Arsenal defeated West Ham United 8-1 in a London derby on Saturday, April 13.
The Danish-Nigerian center forward, who shares the same Nigerian agent as Super Eagles stars Josh Maja, Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina and Joe Aribo, accounted for five of the eight goals scored by Jack Wilshere's Young Gunners.
An incredible attacking performance saw Arsenal race into a four-goal lead inside forty minutes.
Obi-Martin broke the deadlock as early as the 13th minute, and then doubled the advantage by curling the ball into the bottom corner at minute 24.
The 16-year-old grabbed his hat-trick in the 26th minute when he chipped the goalkeeper, before netting his fourth of the afternoon from close range in the 40th minute.
Osman Kamara added gloss to the scoreline just before halftime, slotting home after picking the ball at the edge of the box.
After Kamara made it 6-0 three minutes into the second half, Obi-Martin dusted himself down to convert a penalty after he was brought down in the box by a Hammers player.
After an own goal by goalkeeper Khari Ranson reduced the deficit, Dan Casey found the bottom corner to restore Arsenal's seven-goal advantage in the 74th minute.
Including his five goals against West Ham, Obi-Martin has now mustered 20 goals in fourteen appearances in this season's U18 Premier League.
According to Arsenal youth team expert, Jeorge Bird, Obi-Martin has equaled Rhys Murphy's record for the most goals scored by a schoolboy in a single season for Arsenal U18s with 20 to his name.
