Door closed: Borussia Dortmund star Adeyemi cap-tied to Germany, not eligible for Super Eagles call-up
Published: May 16, 2024
Allnigeriasoccer.com can report with certainty that Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi is not eligible for a Super Eagles call-up amid speculation in the local media that his omission from Germany's squad for the 2024 European Championship could open the door for a call-up to the Nigeria national team.
Born in Munich to a Romanian mother and Nigerian father, he was qualified to represent the national teams of Germany, Romania and Nigeria before he became cap-tied to the Euro 2024 hosts on June 11, 2022.
Adeyemi played in four competitive matches for the Germans, comprising three World Cup qualifiers and one in the Nations League, before turning 21, so he can no longer request for a change of association to represent either Nigeria or Romania.
He has been in the international wilderness since playing a cap-tying game against Hungary, although he was named in Germany's final squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he was a non-playing substitute in all the matches contested by the Mannschaft.
Having previously played for Germany at U16, U17 and U21 levels, Adeyemi made his senior debut for the four-time world champions in a 2022 World Cup qualifier against Armenia, coming off the bench to replace Serge Gnabry with eighteen minutes left on the clock.
The 22-year-old wrapped up the scoring in the 6-0 rout of Armenia, his only international goal to date.
Adeyemi is seemingly not in the good books of the German Football Association after rejecting a call-up to play for the U21s last November.
SC Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, the Nmecha brothers, Kevin Schade, Felix Uduokhai and Justin Njinmah, who all have Nigerian blood flowing in their veins, have not been selected in Germany's squad for the European Championship.
