Published: May 29, 2024
With a statement on their official website, Premier League club Brentford have announced that England U20 international of Nigerian descent Michael Olakigbe has been loaned out to League One side Wigan Athletic
The promising forward will spend the entirety of the 2024-2025 season at the Latics, subject to EFL, FA and Premier League approval.
Since making his senior debut for the Bees in a Carabao Cup fixture against Newport County, Olakigbe has appeared in twelve matches across all competitions for the Londoners, including eight in the Premier League.
He scored two goals in three appearances for Brentford's B team in 2023-2024.
Olakigbe has some League One experience, having made five appearances in the division during a loan spell with Peterborough United in the second half of last season.
The 20-year-old extended his contract with Brentford in November, signing a multi-year deal that keeps him at the club until June 2028.
A product of East Soccer Base Academy, he was signed by Brentford in 2022 after spells with the youth teams of Queens Park Rangers and Fulham.
Olakigbe will start training with his new teammates at Wigan Athletic in June when they begin pre-season preparations.
He has cited Manchester United and Real Madrid icon Cristiano Ronaldo as his footballing idol and has likened himself to ex-Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha.
