Official: Arsenal announce departure of twenty-two players including three Nigerians
Published: June 03, 2024
Through a statement on their official website, Arsenal have confirmed that 22 players will depart the club this month upon the expiration of their contracts.
The list includes three Nigerian players - goalkeepers Arthur Okonkwo andOvie Ejeheri, and left winger Henry Davies whose last campaign with the North London side was disrupted by an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Davies joined Arsenal in the summer of 2021 from Manchester City and signed his professional contract with the club in December of the same year.
Due to injuries, he could only make two appearances for the Gunners, both of which were made in the U18 Premier League in the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 seasons respectively.
Okonkwo's departure has come as no surprise as he had already revealed that he was going to leave the Premier League giants this month.
He joined Arsenal's youth system at the age of eight and quickly progressed through the ranks, making his debut for the U18s as a schoolboy and also made his first appearance for the U21s at the age of 17.
However, he didn't have the opportunity to feature for the first team which necessitated loan spells to Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz in 2022-2023 as well as Wrexham in the just concluded campaign.
Ejeheri, who has been with Arsenal since the age of eight, had his most notable moment with the club during a Papa John's Trophy match against Ipswich Town in December 2021.
In that game, he played a crucial role in helping Arsenal secure victory over the Tractor Boys in a penalty shootout.
