Confirmed: Man Utd retain three Nigerians including right-back called up for 9 first team games
Published: June 05, 2024
Through a statement on their official website, record English champions Manchester United have announced that they will be retaining the services of the trio of Habeeb Ogunneye, Max Oyedele and Victor Musa.
The Nigeria-eligible players were listed among the U24 players that the club have announced that they will be retaining for the forthcoming season, joining Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, Mason Greenwood and Rasmus Hojlund on the long list.
Ogunneye made a giant stride towards playing for the first in the just concluded season, having made the matchday squad on nine occasions but didn't feature in any game.
He was on the bench for Manchester United's FA Cup fifth round victory over Nottingham Forest as well as the nail-biting triumph over Coventry City in the semifinal.
Erik ten Hag also named the London-born fullback in the matchday squad for seven Premier League games including the clashes against Manchester City at the Etihad as well as Liverpool and Arsenal at the Old Trafford.
The 18-year-old also broke into the development side last term, making his Premier League 2 debut against Crystal Palace last August .
Unlike Ogunneye, Musa and Oyedele are still waiting for the opportunity to be involved with the senior side but also took a positive step in their development last season.
The talented central forward made his debut for the U21s by featuring in their Premier League 2 clash with Newcastle last December and went on to make two other appearances, starting against Derby and coming on as a substitute against Middlesbrough in March.
Defensive-minded midfielder Oyedele spent a portion of the second half of last season on loan at Forest Green Rovers and was recalled in March 2024 due to a lack of game time.
The trio will be hoping that they can continue their development with the Premier League giants and eventually break into the first team.
