Pundit reveals two reasons Arsenal are prioritising a deal for Viktor Gyokeres instead of Osimhen
Published: June 26, 2024
Corriere dello Sport reporter Fabio Tarantino has given two key reasons Arsenal are focused on securing the signature of Viktor Gyökeres over Nigeria international Victor Osimhen.
The Gunners are in the market for a proven striker in the summer transfer window and have been linked with the Sporting CP and Napoli stars.
In his first season in Portugal following his transfer from Championship outfit Coventry City, Gyökeres registered an incredible 58 goal involvements (43 goals, 15 assists) in fifty all-competition appearances for Sporting CP.
On the other hand, Osimhen could not match his performances of the 2022-2023 season where he played a key role as Napoli won the Serie A title for the first time in thirty-three years.
The reigning African Footballer of the Year signed a new deal at Napoli last December with a release clause of 130 million euros.
Osimhen desires to play in the Premier League and has been linked with Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal but the aforementioned English clubs believe he is being overvalued and as a result have shifted their focus to other targets.
Writing on Corriere dello Sport's website on Wednesday, Fabio Tarantino explained that Arsenal are prioritizing a deal for Viktor Gyokores instead of Osimhen because the Sweden international costs less than the Nigerian, with a release clause of 100 million euros, which is €30m less than the valuation of the Napoli number 9.
The second reason he gave has to do with the players' wages, noting that the former Championship striker earns less than Osimhen, who is the highest paid player in the Serie A, with wages of ten million euros per annum.
If Osimhen's future is not sorted out in the coming days, he has to return to Napoli for the start of pre-season preparations on July 9-10 and will head to Dimaro Folgarida with his teammates and new coach Antonio Conte on July 11, 2024.
