Chelsea 2 Wrexham 2: Six Super Eagles-eligible players feature as Ugochukwu opens Blues account
Published: July 25, 2024
Six Nigerian players were involved during Chelsea's clash with Wrexham in a pre-season friendly played in the early hours of Thursday morning at the Levi's Stadium in the United States.
Tosin Adarabioyo featured in his first game for the Blues, Noni Madueke, Carney Chukwuemeka, Tyrique George and Lesley Ugochukwu who was on the scoresheet also played for the Premier League giants while Arthur Okonkwo was in goal for Wrexham.
Adarabioyo, Madueke, Chukwuemeka and George started the game but Ugochukwu came off the bench in the second half with Enzo Maresca rejigging his side upon the start of the second period.
Christopher Nkunku gave Chelsea the lead in the 35th minute when George's long range effort was blocked before Marc Guiu controlled the ball into the path of Nkunku who poked it home.
Two minutes before the hour mark, Luke Bolton restored parity for the League One side following a low cross from Seb Revan before Jack Marriott gave them the lead through a brilliant effort in the 71st minute.
Ugochukwu would prevent Maresca from suffering a loss in his first game in charge of Chelsea as the French-Nigerian midfielder's effort from 12 yards out drew parity for the West London side, eight minutes before stoppage time.
It was the first time that the 20-year-old will be finding the back of the net for the two-time European champions and must now build on this momentum to boost his chances of staying at Stamford Bridge for the next campaign.
The Blues will next face Scottish defending champions Celtic on Saturday at the Notre Dame Stadium, United States.
