Left or right midfield role? Chelsea starlet Chukwuemeka reveals his preferred position
Published: July 27, 2024
Chelsea starlet Carney Chukwuemeka has revealed his favourite position between playing from the right side of the midfield and the left.
It has been a tough time for the Super Eagles-eligible midfielder who had his momentum disrupted with an injury against West Ham United on the second matchday of the last Premier League season.
This made him miss out on a large chunk of games last season and could only make 12 appearances across all competitions.
He is trying to make up for lost time and that explains why Enzo Maresca left him on the pitch for the entire duration of the pre-season fixture against Wrexham on Thursday.
The game also saw him play from the right side of the midfield rather than the left where he has played over the years, a role he will have to master under Maresca.
Speaking to Chelsea's official website after the Wrexham fixture, the England youth international reflected on his change of position and revealed his favourite role.
"I'm more used to being on the left side but it is good play in different areas of the pitch," Chukwuemeka said.
"We've worked on the new shape in the first couple of weeks so it will take some time to adapt to it all, but the coach (Enzo Maresca) saw the ideas on the pitch and we worked well together.
"So now it's a case of building on that across the matches to come."
The 20-year-old should also get some minutes when the Blues clash with Celtic later today at the Notre Dame Stadium.
He has been linked with a move to AC Milan but a move has not materialized at the moment.
