Manager Philippe Clement reveals why Rangers re-signed Super Eagles defender Balogun
Published: August 02, 2024
Rangers boss Philippe Clement has explained why the club re-signed Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun after the expiration of his previous contract.
The veteran centre-back rejoined the Scottish giants last summer due to the injury to Leon King and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Despite initial struggles, he featured in 19 games across all competitions, and played a crucial role in their Scottish Cup triumph, keeping a clean sheet in the final against Aberdeen.
Rangers have been trying to beef up their squad as they seek to relinquish the Scottish Premiership from arch-rivals Celtic and have been busy in the transfer market as a result.
Robin Pröpper is their latest signing and the club's manager has expressed his feelings upon signing the Dutch defender as well as re-signing Balogun.
Speaking ahead of his side's Scottish Premiership opener against Hearts at the Tynecastle Stadium tomorrow, Clement explained the importance of having Pröpper and Balogun in his squad.
In quotes relayed Rangers' X account, he said: "Propper has great qualities, he will help the squad to play good football and also will be great with the young players with his experience."
"Having someone like him is gold for players like Clinton Nsiala, it's also why we resigned Leon Balogun.
"We want a top sport culture here where every day we demand ambition to become better."
While the Nigerian defender is certain to feature for the Scottish giants this season, it is unclear whether his international teammate Cyriel Dessers will do so.
The striker has been linked with a move away from the Light Blues and the club is also ready to let him leave.
