After Omorodion deal collapse, Chelsea eye Brentford striker amid interest in Osimhen
Published: August 13, 2024
Premier League club Chelsea are still in the market for a proven goalscorer before the close of the summer transfer window.
Regardless of whether Samuel Omorodion's deal was finalized, the Blues still retained an interest in reigning African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen.
Chelsea had reached a £34.5m agreement with Atletico Madrid for Omorodion but the deal fell through because of contractual complications.
According to The Independent, via Sky Sports UK, Chelsea and Manchester United are eyeing a move for England international Ivan Toney, who is valued in the region of 60 million pounds by Brentford.
Toney has entered the last one year of his contract at the Bees and is not keen on signing a new contract.
Victor Osimhen has made it clear he wants to depart Napoli this month despite signing a contract extension last December with a release clause of 130 million euros.
Antonio Conte has already lined up a replacement in Romelu Lukaku with whom he worked with at Inter Milan but the Nigerian has to be sold to either Paris Saint-Germain or Chelsea before the Belgian's arrival at the Diego Maradona Stadium.
Chelsea are not prepared to spend what Napoli's owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is demanding and have proposed signing Osimhen on loan with an option to buy but the negotiations are deadlocked due to the structure of the deal.
There is a possibility that the Blues would turn their attention to other targets, including Toney, if an agreement cannot be reached with their Serie A counterparts in the coming days.
Osimhen was whiling away his time during pre-season preparations as he was not called up for the five friendlies played by Napoli and did not participate in their first competitive game of the new season against Modena.
