'A little bit pricey' - Ex-Liverpool striker Michael Owen reckons Tottenham overpaid by N62b to sign Solanke 

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen reckons that Tottenham Hotspur overpaid to sign Super Eagles-eligible attacker Dominic Solanke. 

Solanke completed his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur nine days ago, ending his five-year association with Bournemouth for a fee of  £65 million, which makes the one-cap England international the most expensive player sold by the Cherries. 

The 26-year-old is also the most expensive player acquired by Tottenham, surpassing Tanguy Ndombélé who cost 60 million euros when he joined from Lyon in the summer of 2019.

Solanke joined Tottenham Hotspur after a breakout 2023-2024 season in which he scored 21 goals in 42 all-competition appearances. 

He spent thirteen years in the Chelsea youth system, where he was tipped to be a star of the future but could only make one senior appearance before heading to Liverpool in 2017.

Owen acknowledged that Tottenham have signed a striker with Premier League pedigree but highlighted that the north London club overpaid for him by around 30 million pounds (equivalent of N62 billion).

Speaking on Premier League Productions on Monday night, Owen stated: "He's got attributes that would suit Tottenham Hotspur. When I first heard Solanke to Spurs, I said, 'oh yeah I like that, I have seen that' and then I heard about the fee, I thought that's quite heavy. I was thinking he might be a £30 - £35m player. 

"But if they want him, they were desperate for him, they needed someone in that position. He's proven in the Premier League, he's proven to score goals, he works hard off the ball.

"There are a lot of boxes that he's ticking. He's not an unknown signing so I do like the signing. I just thought he was a little bit pricey."

Solanke went the distance on his full Premier League debut as Tottenham and Leicester City shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium.
