Aiyenugba tells Nwabali to prioritise move to England; wants Olorunleke included in squad for Afconq
Published: August 26, 2024
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba has offered advice to Nigerian shot-stopper Stanley Nwabali amidst ongoing transfer speculations linking him with several clubs around the world.
Nwabali, currently with Chippa United in South Africa, has been the subject of interest from various clubs, including Queens Park Rangers (England), Al-Ettifaq (Saudi Arabia), Kaizer Chiefs (South Africa), and Orlando Pirates (South Africa).
However, with just days left in the summer transfer window, the 28-year-old goalkeeper remains with Chippa United, as no club has submitted an official proposal for his services.
In an interview with allnigeriasoccer.com, Aiyenugba advised Nwabali to prioritize a move to England, specifically to Queens Park Rangers, following his stellar performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
"With his performance in the Nations Cup and his club side, my advice is he should go for Queens Park Rangers," Aiyenugba said.
Nwabali made a name for himself during the 2023 AFCON tournament, where he delivered a standout performance, keeping four consecutive clean sheets and helping Nigeria reach the finals.
Despite his heroics, Nigeria finished as runners-up, losing to host nation Ivory Coast in the final.
In addition to advising Nwabali on his next career move, Aiyenugba also weighed in on the upcoming Super Eagles squad selection for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda in September.
Nigeria is set to face Benin Republic on September 7 in Uyo before traveling to Kigali to clash with Rwanda at the Amahoro National Stadium.
Aiyenugba suggested the inclusion of Dele Olorunleke as a third goalkeeper option behind Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye, who recently signed a new contract with Udinese in Italy.
When asked to name a potential addition to the squad, Aiyenugba responded, "I think I nominate Ojo Olorunleke."
Olorunleke, a former Enyimba FC goalkeeper, recently completed a move to Sudanese club Al-Merreikh following a successful three-year stint with the Nigerian giants.
The 29-year-old was instrumental in Enyimba’s 2022/2023 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title win under former Super Eagles coach Finidi George.
