UCL: Meghoma bags assist on debut but Rangers suffer 3-1 loss to Onyedika's Club Brugge
Published: August 19, 2025
Rangers’ new signing Jayden Meghoma made his full debut on Tuesday night as the Scottish giants suffered a 3-1 defeat to Raphael Onyedika's Club Brugge in their UEFA Champions League playoff match at Ibrox Stadium.
The visitors took control of the contest early on, racing to a commanding lead in the first half with goals from Romeo Vermant, Jorne Spileers, and Brandon Mechele.
Meghoma, who only joined Rangers on a season-long loan from Brentford days earlier, was handed a surprise start by manager Russell Martin.
The 19-year-old fullback, who impressed last season on loan at Preston North End, showed flashes of his ability despite the difficult evening for the team.
After a quiet first half, Meghoma came alive in the second period, surging forward to set up Danilo for Rangers’ only goal of the night.
He also contributed defensively, completing 29 accurate passes and making two successful tackles before being substituted in the 70th minute for captain James Tavernier.
While the Nigeria-eligible defender will be disappointed with the result, his attacking contribution and moments of composure provided Rangers fans with a glimpse of the qualities he brings to the squad.
Another summer signing of Nigerian descent, Emmanuel Fernandez, was named among the substitutes but did not feature, while Cyriel Dessers missed out entirely after failing a late fitness test.
The Light Blues now face an uphill task in the return leg, while Meghoma will hope to build on his debut performance as he settles into life at Ibrox.
