Super Eagles left-back Onyemaechi scores fantastic goal against Sporting but leaves game injured
Published: December 16, 2024
Boavista are sweating on the fitness of Bruno Onyemaechi ahead of their next game in the Liga Portugal against AVS Futebol.
The Nigeria international was on the scoresheet as Boavista were beaten 3-2 by league leaders Sporting CP at the Estádio José Alvalade on Saturday night.
After Robert Bozenik cancelled out Viktor Gyökeres' opener, Trincão restored Sporting's lead three minutes into the second half, only for Onyemaechi to bring the game back to parity in the 58th minute.
Onyemaechi's stunning left-footed shot from inside the box was too hot for the Sporting goalkeeper to handle despite his best efforts to save it.
Boavista coach Cristiano Bacci positioned Onyemaechi as a left winger against Sporting to boost the team's attacking options.
His brilliant half-volley made Boavista the first team to score more than one goal against Sporting in domestic competitions this season.
However, he suffered an injury in the closing minutes of the contest and was replaced by Manuel Namora.
According to Portuguese sports daily A Bola, Onyemaechi left the pitch with cramps and pain in his right thigh, and will be assessed by the medical team when the squad returns to training on Monday.
Onyemaechi, Nigeria's most used player during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, has started every match for Boavista in this season's Liga Portugal, except for the home game against Estoril Praia at the end of August.
