Onugkha: Russian-born striker who wants to play for Super Eagles loaned out by FC Copenhagen
Published: January 27, 2025
With a statement on the official website, Danish Superliga giants FC Copenhagen have announced that German Onugkha has joined Vejle Boldklub on loan for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season.
Onugkha is returning for a second spell at Vejle, where he was top scorer in the Danish top-flight last season with fifteen goals in 31 matches.
Born in Moscow to a Russian mother and Nigerian father, the forward confirmed in September 2024 that he was open to representing the Super Eagles after rejecting a call-up to the Russian national team.
Onugkha joined FC Copenhagen on transfer deadline day last summer but has struggled for playing opportunities at The Lions.
The 28-year-old has played in seven games for FC Copenhagen since his arrival, including five starts, but did not get on the scoresheet.
He was left out of FC Copenhagen's travelling squad to Spain for a training camp on Sunday because of his imminent move to Vejle Boldklub.
Commenting on the temporary departure of Onugkha, FC Copenhagen's sports director Sune Smith-Nielsen said: "We brought German in to strengthen the competition in our attack during an autumn half of the season with many games. However, as the autumn progressed, the hierarchy has shifted.
"That’s football – things evolve, and in this case, it means German is no longer at the forefront of the battle for playing time. German has been presented with a good opportunity to return to Vejle and get more minutes on the pitch."
German Onugkha has been included in Vejle BK's squad for the training camp in Turkey.
The dual-national player lists Torpedo Tamala, Narovchat, Atmis Kevdo-Melsitovo, Zenit Penza, Volgar Astrakhan, Krasnodar and Tambov as his previous clubs.
He enjoyed loan spells at Krylia Sovetov, Rubin Kazan and Bnei Sakhnin in his first spell at Vejle.
