Super Eagles striker Iheanacho makes full debut for Middlesbrough in loss to Sheffield United
Published: February 12, 2025
Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho made his highly anticipated debut for Middlesbrough on Wednesday, following his loan move from Sevilla.
The 28-year-old was included in the starting lineup for their Championship clash against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
Iheanacho's debut was marked by a mix of positive and challenging moments, as Middlesbrough were defeated 3-1 by the Blades.
His presence added a new attacking dimension for the Teessiders, though it wasn’t enough to prevent them from slipping to a third consecutive loss.
Iheanacho looked promising in the early stages, notably testing the Sheffield United defense with a left-footed shot in the 31st minute, which was just wide.
A few minutes later, Sheffield United took the lead with a goal from Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, leaving Middlesbrough to chase the game.
The Nigerian international continued to influence the play, with a shot blocked and another chance that was high and wide in the 62nd minute.
His most notable contribution came in the 59th minute when he was caught offside after attempting to create a scoring opportunity for his side.
Despite these efforts, Iheanacho was substituted in the 73rd minute as Middlesbrough looked for a spark, with Tommy Conway replacing him.
Middlesbrough, trailing 2-1 at the time of Iheanacho’s substitution, were unable to recover, with Sheffield United sealing the win through a third goal in the dying minutes.
While the result was disappointing, Iheanacho's debut was seen as a step in the right direction for the forward, who will be looking to build on this performance in upcoming fixtures as Middlesbrough aim to climb up the Championship table.
