'Embarrassing' – Doncaster Rovers coach claims Crystal Palace loanee Goodman faked an injury
Published: August 20, 2025
Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has launched a scathing attack on Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Owen Goodman, accusing him of faking injury during Tuesday night’s Yorkshire derby at the Accu Stadium.
Huddersfield claimed a 2-0 victory to extend their unbeaten run over Doncaster, a streak stretching back to March 1982. But the match was overshadowed by controversy, with McCann blasting Goodman’s behaviour as 'embarrassing'.
Speaking after the defeat, McCann was quoted as saying by Yorkshire Post: "I thought we were very, very good and tactically spot-on. We didn’t give them an inch (in the first half).
"They fake an injury with the goalkeeper, 25 or 30 minutes in and it needs to be sorted out.
"It’s embarrassing and I don’t know how people can do that, I really don’t. I don’t get it.”
The Doncaster boss went further, calling for refereeing bodies to clamp down on what he described as a growing trend of gamesmanship.
"It is what it is... I think the referee’s association needs to sort something out about that because that just can’t happen.
"We could easily go 1-0 up, and I could do that 10 times in the second half. That’s how ridiculous it can get."
McCann’s side will aim to bounce back when they face Port Vale this weekend, but the controversy has shone a spotlight on 21-year-old Goodman, who is currently on loan at Huddersfield from Crystal Palace.
The young goalkeeper impressed last season during a loan spell at AFC Wimbledon, helping them reach the League One play-offs, and is now using his time with the Terriers to develop further in hopes of challenging Dean Henderson for a Premier League spot at Selhurst Park next season.
