'Wish him well' - Oliseh agrees with Ferdinand on departure of Real Madrid-bound Alexander-Arnold
Published: April 01, 2025
Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has backed Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand’s call for Liverpool fans to appreciate Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contributions instead of criticizing his decision to leave the club.
The 26-year-old right-back, a product of Liverpool’s academy, has reportedly agreed to join Real Madrid on a free transfer, sparking mixed reactions among Reds supporters.
Ferdinand addressed the controversy on his show "Rio Presents," urging Liverpool fans to acknowledge Alexander-Arnold’s achievements rather than resent his exit.
"You should be saying thank you and good luck,” Ferdinand stated. "Trent Alexander-Arnold, you didn’t pay a penny for him. He’s one of your own and he won it all.”
The former England defender highlighted that Alexander-Arnold is moving to Real Madrid, a club widely regarded as the pinnacle of world football, rather than a domestic rival.
"He’s choosing to leave, not for a rival, not for a team in the Premier League, but for the biggest club in the world. You should be saying, ‘I’d love him to stay but well done," Ferdinand added.
Oliseh echoed Ferdinand’s stance on social media, emphasizing the need for gratitude.
"Like is often the case, Rio nails it again on the Trent Alexander-Arnold departure rants. The man served you, decides to leave, and you should wish him well!” Oliseh posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Real Madrid and Alexander-Arnold are reportedly confident of finalizing the deal this summer, marking the end of an era for the right-back at Anfield.
With his departure imminent, attention now shifts to how Liverpool plans to fill the void left by one of their most decorated academy graduates.
