'Kayode is back' - Brentford boss confirms award-winning fullback in contention for trip to Newcastle
Published: April 01, 2025
Brentford manager Thomas Frank has confirmed that Nigeria-eligible fullback Michael Kayode is fit to return for their Premier League clash against Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Kayode joined Brentford from Fiorentina in the January transfer window after he was named as the winner of the 2024 'Best Italian Golden Boy' award.
He has been sidelined since February due to a knee injury, missing crucial league fixtures.
During his spell on the sidelines, the 20-year-old was unavailable for two Premier League matches against Aston Villa and Bournemouth.
However, speaking in his pre-match press conference, Frank provided a positive update on his squad and revealed that Kayode is in contention to feature against Newcastle.
"The squad looks quite positive, said Frank, according to Brentford's official website.
"Michael Kayode is back in, but Mathi [Jensen] is not ready yet. There was some illness there, which means he has missed some training.”
Kayode’s return will be a major boost for Brentford as Frank looks to strengthen his defensive setup heading into the final stretch of the season.
Although he has yet to register a goal or assist, he has displayed glimpses of his talent in the Premier League matches he has featured in.
Since joining Brentford, Kayode has featured in four Premier League matches, contributing to two victories, one draw, and just one defeat against Tottenham.
With the Bees looking to climb the table, Frank will be hoping that Kayode’s return adds more stability to the team and helps them secure a crucial victory against Newcastle at St. James' Park.
