Forest coach explains formation switch after Aina's injury, provides update on Super Eagles RB
Published: April 02, 2025
Nuno Espirito Santo became the first manager to do a league double over Manchester United since the legendary Brian Clough, following a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at the City Ground on Tuesday night.
Anthony Elanga scored what proved to be the winning goal against his former team with just five minutes on the clock.
As expected, Super Eagles right back Ola Aina started for the two-time European champions, while Taiwo Awoniyi kept his place in the starting lineup as cover for the injured Chris Wood.
The Chelsea Academy graduate had to be substituted due to injury in the 39th minute, with the early diagnosis suggesting a calf-related injury.
Nottingham Forest Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo made a tactical change following Aina's substitution, taking Danilo off and introducing Morato.
In a post-match interview with TNT Sports, which was monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, he explained his reasoning behind the substitution.
"Look, I think the game was going away from us, we were not able to control too many situations especially on the left side. We decided the moment after the injury (to Ola Aina) to go to a back five so Morato could give a hand and I think it worked out perfectly."
The full extent of Aina’s injury remains unclear and he is set to undergo tests this week to determine the severity of the ailment.
When asked if he had spoken to Ola Aina to check on his condition and the seriousness of the injury, Santo responded: "We don't know. Hopefully it's not too serious but it's always a concern when a player injures by himself alone.
"We have to do a scan, assess him and see how it goes."
Aina has received widespread praise from fans and pundits for his impressive performances this season.
The versatile fullback has started in all thirty Premier League matches contested by Forest, scoring two goals while producing an assist.
