2025 U20 Afcon: Ibrahim finds the net as Flying Eagles hit six-game scoring streak against Tunisia
Published: May 01, 2025
Nigeria's Flying Eagles kicked off their 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 win over Tunisia at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, thanks to a first-half goal from midfielder Auwal Ibrahim.
Ibrahim's first half goal saw the Flying Eagles extend their scoring streak against the Tunisian U20s to six games.
Aliyu Zubairu’s side started brightly, showing composure and confidence from the outset.
After a few early chances from Divine Oliseh and Kparobo Arierhi, Nigeria took the lead in the 36th minute.
Arierhi, instrumental in the build-up, delivered a smart pass to Ibrahim, who finished calmly past Tunisian goalkeeper Thomas Zouaghi.
Despite Tunisia’s spirited response, particularly in the second half, Nigeria's defence held firm.
Goalkeeper Ebenezer Ifeanyi Harcourt was called into action several times, notably denying Mohamed Anene early on and producing two crucial saves in the closing stages to preserve his clean sheet.
The Flying Eagles had a chance to double their lead when they were awarded a penalty in the 69th minute after substitute Yushau Armiyau was brought down.
However, VAR intervened and the decision was overturned, keeping Tunisia in the contest.
Nigeria saw out the final minutes with disciplined defending despite late pressure and five minutes of added time.
Yellow cards were issued to Armiyau and captain Daniel Bameyi as tensions rose, but Zubairu’s team held on for a vital opening win.
With three points secured, Nigeria begin their quest for an eighth continental title on a positive note, while Tunisia will look to bounce back in their next Group B fixture.
