Jacob Murphy: Forward wanted by Nigeria battles Liverpool and Wolves stars, 3 others for PL POTM
Published: May 01, 2025
Jacob Murphy's superb performances have earned him a nomination for the Premier League Player of the Month award for April 2025, the league announced on Thursday.
The English-born left winger is among the dual-national players being tracked by Nigeria coach Eric Chelle ahead of the resumption of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and is also believed to be on the radar of England boss Thomas Tuchel.
Murphy was in sensational attacking form last month, registering six goal involvements across six matches.
He set up Alexander Isak's goal against Brentford and struck twice in quick succession against Leicester City.
Now boasting 11 league assists this season, the 30-year-old continued to shine with a goal and an assist in Newcastle United's 5-0 rout of Crystal Palace.
In his last appearance in April, Murphy earned a penalty in the 3-0 win over relegated Ipswich Town.
With Murphy in the starting lineup, the Magpies recorded five wins, collecting 15 points from a possible 18—a run of form that has kept them in contention for a Champions League spot.
Murphy appears on the shortlist for the Premier League Player of the Month award alongside Newcastle United teammate Harvey Barnes, Wolverhampton Wanderers pair Rayan Aït-Nouri and Jorgen Strand Larsen, Alexis Mac Allister of Liverpool, Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers and Ryan Sessegnon of Fulham.
The English-Irish-Nigerian forward has 8 goals in 31 Premier League games this term.
