'I'm not the coach' - Eric Chelle shuts down question on Reggae Boyz, focused on Super Eagles
Published: May 30, 2025
Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle says his full attention is on his own squad as they prepare to face Jamaica's Reggae Boyz in the Unity Cup final on Saturday.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Chelle declined to speak about the opposing team, stressing his focus is solely on Nigeria’s performance.
"I don’t want to talk about that,” he said when asked about Jamaica’s strengths.
"The reality is that I need to stay focused on my team and our game. I’m not the coach of Jamaica."
Chelle has overseen steady progress in the team during the Unity Cup and says daily improvement has been the key.
“The most important thing for me is how my team plays the game, and how much we improve every day after each training session,” he explained.
The coach made it clear that while Jamaica are worthy finalists, he remains committed to refining Nigeria’s tactics and discipline.
With the Super Eagles aiming to cap off their Unity Cup campaign on a high, Chelle’s measured approach could prove vital against a Jamaican team full of energy and belief.
The Unity Cup serves as preparation for the Super Eagles ahead of the resumption of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in September 2025.
The three-time African champions will face 2018 World Cup hosts Russia in a glamour friendly in Moscow on June 6.
