'Jamaica has a great team' - Eric Chelle urges Super Eagles to stay sharp in Unity Cup final
Published: May 31, 2025
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has called on his players to stay focused as they prepare to face Jamaica in the final match of the 2025 Unity Cup in London.
Speaking to Nigerian journalist Austin Okon Akpan, Chelle acknowledged the quality of the Jamaican team and stressed the importance of maintaining sharpness. “It will be a great game because Jamaica has a great team, but we are ready,” Chelle said.
Chelle also commented on the mood within the Super Eagles camp. “You saw the training session and the players are relaxed, but we need to be focused on our weaknesses actually,” he added, hinting at areas that still need improvement despite the team’s progress.
The Super Eagles, three-time Africa Cup of Nations champions, began their Unity Cup campaign with a narrow 2-1 victory over Ghana, but Chelle admitted fatigue set in late in the match. “We were tired in the second half against Ghana,” he said.
The clash against Jamaica is seen as another critical test for the team as they seek to build momentum ahead of a high-profile friendly against Russia.
That match will serve as further preparation for Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where they have made a poor start and currently face a difficult path to qualification.
The Unity Cup has provided Chelle with a valuable opportunity to assess players and experiment tactically.
However, he is keen to ensure the team finishes the tournament strongly before shifting full focus to the demanding qualification campaign that lies ahead.
