'He's ready' – Rangers boss backs Dessers to start UCL qualifier against Panathinaikos
Published: July 30, 2025
Cyriel Dessers has been declared fit and ready to start for Rangers ahead of the second leg of the Uefa Champions League second qualifying round against Panathinaikos, head coach Russell Martin confirmed.
The 30-year-old is in contention to lead the line in Athens as the Ibrox side aim to build on their 2-0 advantage secured in the first leg at Ibrox.
Dessers, who featured prominently in Rangers European campaign last season, will be a key figure in the Scottish club's push to reach the group stage of Europe’s elite competition.
He started and was in action for 45 minutes as the Light Blues came from two goals behind to draw with Middlesbrough in a friendly match at Ibrox on Saturday, July 26.
Martin said last week that the Nigeria international wasn't ready to start a game but confirmed at the pre-match press conference that the situation has changed.
"He started a game on Saturday and got valuable 45 minutes in him," Martin told reporters.
"We took him off as a precaution just to make sure, with Hamza's injury as well, we had plenty of options available. So now, he's ready."
Dessers' inclusion could prove vital as Rangers look to counter a likely aggressive start from the Greek side, who need to overturn a two-goal deficit.
With his experience and physical presence, the former Feyenoord and Genk striker is seen as a crucial asset in navigating the tense away tie.
