'First trophy with Super Eagles' - Moses Simon celebrates after scoring and converting penalty v Jamaica
Published: June 01, 2025
Super Eagles forward Moses Simon has shared his joy following Nigeria’s penalty shootout victory over Jamaica to win the Unity Cup on Saturday evening in London.
Simon, who scored the opening goal in the 9th minute and later converted his penalty during the shootout, expressed his excitement in an emotional post-match reaction.
He acknowledged the quality of the Jamaican team and credited the coaching staff for keeping the players focused.
“We expected because we know it's a difficult side,” he said. “ The strong side they have, they are very physical. So the coach just told us to be calm and we have a good result against them.”
“So and which we profit from that. Everyone is excited and everyone is glad,” he continued
Simon also spoke about the importance of the Unity Cup victory, both for the team and himself.
“Of course it's the first trophy with the new manager and I will say it's the first trophy for me with the national team. Every trophy is a trophy we cherish it and we'll keep going."
The Super Eagles claimed the title after a 2-2 draw in regulation time, edging Jamaica 5-4 in the penalty shootout.
Simon was joined by Kelechi Iheanacho, Tolu Arokodare, Bruno Onyemaechi, and debutant Uche Chrisantus in converting from the spot.
The win marks a positive step forward for the Super Eagles as the team builds confidence under a new managerial era ahead of upcoming crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers later this year.
The Eric Chelle-led team will face Russia in their next outing on June 6 in Moscow.
