Marriage vs Super Eagles duty: John Utaka shares honest take on Ahmed Musa's exit from camp
Published: June 03, 2025
Former Super Eagles forward John Utaka has reacted to Ahmed Musa’s decision to leave Nigeria’s national team camp to get married, calling for due process and proper handling of national team matters.
Musa, who plays for Kano Pillars, withdrew from the Super Eagles camp after Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Ghana in the Unity Cup friendly at the Gtech Community Stadium in London.
He later got married to Asmau Moriki in a private ceremony held in Kano State.
Speaking on Brila FM’s No Holds Barred, Utaka said, "We don't know what discussions were held before Musa went to camp. It's a national duty, things have to be done correctly."
Musa’s withdrawal came shortly after the hard-fought win over Ghana, in which he was a second half substitute.
While the Super Eagles continued preparations for their next match, the experienced winger returned to Nigeria for the wedding ceremony.
Utaka, who earned 44 caps for Nigeria, did not criticize Musa directly but emphasized the importance of handling national duty with structure and transparency.
Musa, 32, is Nigeria’s most capped player and has been a respected figure in the national setup for over a decade.
However, his recent personal decision to leave camp has sparked discussion among fans and former players.
