'I know all the players' - New Super Eagles invitee Olusegun hails Russia's winning mentality
Published: June 03, 2025
Olakunle Olusegun has shared his thoughts ahead of Nigeria's highly anticipated international friendly against Russia on Friday, calling for determination and focus from his teammates.
The FC Krasnodar attacker received a call-up to the Super Eagles squad following the withdrawal of several forwards due to various reasons.
The former Golden Eaglets star expressed familiarity with many of the players in the Russian national team, describing them as "good players" with a winning mentality.
"I know all the players in the national team in Russia. They are good players and they have the mindset of winning every game they play," Olusegun told allnigeriasoccer.com.
The forward urged the Super Eagles not to underestimate the Russian side, emphasizing the need for mental strength and full concentration.
"So, when Nigeria want to play them, they have to be determined and focused and never underrate anyone," he added.
"We all know that Russian national team are also a big team. So, I think it would be a tough game."
Looking ahead to the clash, Olusegun highlighted the importance of an early breakthrough for Nigeria, suggesting that scoring first could disrupt Russia's rhythm and give the Super Eagles the upper hand.
"I think if we can get early goal, it might turn them down and we can win the game, because all players now are ready to play in the game, so I believe them and believe they can win it."
The 23-year-old won the Russian Premier League with Krasnodar, scoring two goals in 19 league appearances.
Olakunle will be aiming to carry that form into the national team setup as he looks forward to potentially making his debut for the Super Eagles.
