Ajibade in sensational form and four other talking points from Super Falcons' 2-0 win over Cameroon
Published: June 03, 2025
Nigeria secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Cameroon in the first of two friendly matches between the nations, as both sides intensify preparations for the upcoming Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament.
Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade led by example, scoring both goals in the first half to cap a dominant showing from the Nigerian side.
Allnigeriasoccer.com presents five observations from the match.
Dominant first half performance from Falcons
Nigeria delivered a commanding first-half performance against Cameroon, netting two goals before the break to take control of the match.
The Super Falcons dictated the tempo from the first whistle, with Cameroon struggling to find their rhythm and cope with the intensity.
However, the Indomitable Lionesses showed improvement in the second half, nearly pulling one back late in the game, only to be denied by a brilliant save from goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Rasheedat Ajibade menace to Cameroon
Super Falcons skipper Rasheedat Ajibade was in sensational form, proving to be a constant threat to the Cameroonian defence from the opening whistle.
Her maturity, movement, composure, and leadership were instrumental as Nigeria displayed a dominant performance in the first half.
Ajibade opened the scoring in the 28th minute, confidently converting a penalty she had won herself after being fouled in the box.
She added a second in the 43rd minute, finishing clinically after a precise pass from Omorinsola Babajide found her inside the area.
Her brace not only secured the win but underlined her importance to the team as they prepare for the WAFCON challenge ahead.
Rinsola suffers injury blow in second half
Former Liverpool forward Omorinsola Babajide picked up a minor injury in the second half, forcing her to be substituted during Nigeria's friendly against Cameroon.
Rinsola, who had impressed with a lively performance that thrilled the home fans, was replaced by Bolaji Olamide in the 65th minute.
Rinsola will now hope to recover in time as she continues to push for a place in Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming WAFCON tournament.
Onumonu struggles to impress despite Oshoala's absence
Nigeria delivered a dominant and entertaining display in front of their home crowd at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Ogun State, but forward Ifeoma Onumonu once again failed to seize her opportunity.
With star striker Asisat Oshoala unavailable, Onumonu—previously viewed as the natural second choice—was handed a starting role.
However, she struggled to make an impact and came underwhelmingly short of expectations.
Her below-par performance, which echoed earlier criticisms, led to a halftime substitution, with Francisca Ordega coming on to take her place.
Downpour affects Cameroon performance
Cameroon found it difficult to cope in all areas of the game during their clash with Nigeria at the MKO Abiola Stadium.
The Indomitable Lionesses struggled to create chances, win duels, complete passes, and maintain defensive organization throughout the match.
Their underwhelming performance may have been affected by the heavy downpour that soaked the pitch, creating challenging conditions and making it hard for players to fully express themselves.
