'Opportunity to prove himself' - Eric Chelle says Olusegun was closely monitored before Nigeria call-up
Published: June 06, 2025
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has shed light on the decision to hand Olakunle Olusegun his maiden invitation to the national team, describing the upcoming friendly against Russia as a chance for the winger to prove his worth.
Olusegun was drafted into the squad following a wave of withdrawals among the forward line ahead of Friday’s international friendly at the Luzhniki Stadium.
The match is part of Nigeria’s preparations for the resumption of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September.
Chelle, speaking in an interview on Match TV, revealed that the national team technical crew had been monitoring Olusegun’s development for some time, particularly during his stint with Russian Premier League champions FC Krasnodar.
“We have been closely monitoring Olusegun in recent months. The upcoming match will be a good opportunity for him to prove himself, given his experience playing in Russia,” said the Malian tactician.
The former Flying Eagles star had a decent campaign with Krasnodar, scoring two goals in 19 league appearances as the club clinched the domestic title.
His familiarity with the Russian terrain and football style, Chelle believes, could give Nigeria an edge in the friendly encounter, while also helping the player settle into the national team setup.
Currently fourth in Group C of the World Cup qualifiers with seven points—six behind leaders South Africa—Nigeria faces an uphill task in securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The match against Russia, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, is seen as a vital test for fringe players like Olusegun who are eager to break into the main squad before the qualifiers resume.
