Chelsea lead Manchester City in battle for teenage African attacking midfielder

Chelsea are reportedly leading Manchester City in the race to sign highly rated South African attacking midfielder Camden Schaper, who currently plays in Blackburn Rovers’ academy.

The 13-year-old, who previously played for SuperSport United in South Africa before moving to England last year, has quickly drawn attention with his performances at youth level.

Since joining Blackburn’s Category One academy, Schaper has made significant progress, prompting interest from two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

According to The Sun UK, Chelsea are now in pole position to secure his signature and are preparing an offer worth around £700,000.

While Manchester City remain interested—particularly as Schaper’s younger brother Astin is already part of their youth setup as a goalkeeper—it is understood that Chelsea have made the more compelling proposal.

The youngster’s development has been closely monitored since his move from South Africa, where he was part of the renowned SuperSport United academy system.

His technical ability, vision, and flair in the final third have marked him out as a standout talent, even among older age groups.

Should the deal go through, Schaper would become one of the youngest additions to Chelsea’s highly competitive academy at Cobham, joining a growing group of international prospects recruited in recent years.

The Blues continue to invest heavily in their youth ranks as part of a long-term strategy to secure future stars.

Blackburn, meanwhile, are expected to accept the offer, given the size of the fee and Schaper’s age.

The Championship side will also retain a percentage of any future sale, providing them with potential returns down the line.

While it remains to be seen how Schaper’s career will unfold, his potential move to Chelsea represents another step in his rapid rise through the footballing ranks.
