Portugal coach singles out one Super Falcons player for praise after gritty draw in Amadora

Speaking after his side's hard-fought goalless draw against Nigeria in an international friendly staged at Estádio José Gomes in Amadora on Monday evening, Portugal coach Francisco Neto singled out Christy Ucheibe for special praise.

The friendly fixture was part of Portugal's build-up to the 2025 European Championship, while the Super Falcons used the encounter to fine-tune their tactics ahead of the upcoming Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

Portugal dominated possession but struggled with decision-making in attack, while the nine-time African champions threatened rarely in the first half.

Chiamaka Nnadozie made key saves and Francisca Ordega nearly scored a game-winning goal in the 80th minute.

The Al-Ittihad forward spotted the Portugal goalkeeper off her line and tried an audacious strike but was denied by the crossbar.

Manager Francisco Neto acknowledged that The Navegadoras found it more difficult in the second half to control the midfield, largely due to Christy Ucheibe controlling central spaces more effectively.

In quotes relayed by Bola ne Rede, Neto said: "In the second half, I think we didn't recognize the midfielder as often on the inside.

"There was more space on the inside and we needed to connect with more patience.

"We continued to try to go out longer, with the full-back following us and Christy [Ucheibe] controlling that area better."

A household name in Portuguese football, Ucheibe has enjoyed remarkable success with Benfica, winning five consecutive league titles, five Taça da Liga trophies, one Taça de Portugal and two Supertaças.

The 24-year-old often lines up in defence for Benfica but takes on a midfield role when playing for the Super Falcons.
