'The club will update you' – Rangers manager deflects question on future of Dessers
Published: August 29, 2025
Rangers manager Russell Martin has failed to provide an update on the future of Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers, amid speculation linking him with a move away from the club before the close of the summer transfer window.
Dessers, who ended last season as the club’s top scorer, has been the subject of transfer speculation, with Serie A side Hellas Verona and Greek outfit Panathinaikos reportedly showing interest in securing his services.
However, addressing the media ahead of the clash against Celtic, Martin deflected questions seeking clarification on the future of the Nigerian striker.
He added that the club would communicate any developments through its official communication channels should any transfer materialize.
"No, I think the club will update you, the same as if we sign any players. The club will update you when that becomes anything," Russell Martin told reporters at Friday's press conference when asked to comment on the future of Cyriel Dessers and Nicolas Raskin.
The Nigerian forward has missed Rangers’ last four matches in all competitions after sustaining an ankle injury in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League qualifier against Viktoria Plzen.
He has now reportedly returned to full fitness and is expected to be available for the Old Firm derby against Celtic.
The former Southampton manager will be keen with the striker’s comeback, especially after the team’s disappointing 6-0 defeat to Club Brugge in midweek.
Meanwhile, Dessers, named in Nigeria’s 31-man provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Rwanda, will be aiming to feature and make his mark in the upcoming clash with Celtic.
