'They call her Kante' – CAF names Super Falcons midfielder among rising stars to watch at Wafcon
Published: July 03, 2025
Nigerian midfielder Deborah Abiodun has been named by Confederation of African Football (CAF) official website among the top five rising stars expected to make a significant impact at the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The 21-year-old, who plays for Dallas Trinity FC, has steadily established herself as one of the most promising talents in African women’s football.
Abiodun was first introduced to the global stage when she earned a place in Nigeria’s squad for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.
Two years later, she continues to impress, with Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu reaffirming his faith by including her in the squad for the continental showpiece.
Renowned for her tireless work rate, Abiodun is often compared to French star N’Golo Kanté due to her relentless energy and ability to cover every blade of grass.
Profiling Abiodun, CAF wrote: "They call her Kanté… because she runs everywhere. This nickname for Deborah Abiodun speaks volumes about her reputation.
"A tireless midfielder, the 21-year-old Nigerian has carved out a niche for herself in the Dallas Trinity squad."
Abiodun's game goes beyond breaking up play. Trained at Rivers Angels, she has developed into a midfielder capable of dictating tempo, distributing the ball efficiently, and reading the game with exceptional clarity.
CAF Online highlighted Abiodun’s role at the heart of Nigeria’s midfield, emphasising that her responsibility extends beyond winning possession.
She is also tasked with transitioning play smoothly and piercing opposition lines — a combination that underlines her value to the team.
With Nigeria targeting a record-extending tenth continental title, Abiodun’s influence could prove decisive.
Her blend of stamina, tactical intelligence, and composure marks her out as a player to watch in Morocco, where her performances might just shape the Super Falcons’ destiny.
The 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco on Saturday, July 5, with Nigeria opening their campaign against Tunisia on Sunday evening.
