Wafcon Nigeria 3 Tunisia 0: Babajide, Oshoala, Ihezuo fire Super Falcons to comfortable win
Published: July 06, 2025
Nigeria’s Super Falcons launched their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a commanding 3–0 victory over Tunisia at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.
The nine-time champions started brightly, taking the lead in the 4th minute when Asisat Oshoala capitalised on a well-placed cross to finish confidently.
Nigeria continued to dictate play, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade pulling the strings in midfield and Deborah Abiodun and Toni Payne providing energy and creativity.
Just before the interval, Nigeria thought they had doubled their advantage when Babajide found the net.
Initially, the goal was disallowed as Oshoala was judged to have fouled in the build-up.
However, after a VAR review in the third minute of first half stoppage time, the decision was overturned and the goal stood, confirming Nigeria’s 2–0 lead at half-time.
In the second half, coach Justin Madugu’s substitutions added fresh impetus.
Christy Ucheibe, Esther Okoronkwo and Chinwendu Ihezuo were introduced, with Nigeria maintaining their attacking pressure.
The breakthrough came in the 84th minute when Ihezuo calmly finished with her left foot into the bottom corner, following a neat sequence involving Michelle Alozie and Ucheibe.
Tunisia struggled to threaten Nigeria’s disciplined defence marshalled by Osinachi Ohale and Oluwatosin Demehin.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie dealt comfortably with Tunisia’s few efforts on target, while Nigeria’s attacking line could have added more, missing several chances.
The result reflects Nigeria’s dominance and underlines their status as tournament favourites.
Combining attacking flair with defensive solidity, the Super Falcons made a strong statement to their Group B rivals as they continue their pursuit of a record-extending tenth continental title.
