'This is what we need' – Oparanozie hails ex-England U20 forward after first goal in Nigeria colours

Former Super Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie has applauded Rinsola Babajide for her impactful performance during Nigeria's 3-0 win over Tunisia in their opening match at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Sunday.

Babajide previously represented her country of birth England at U19, U20 and U21 level before switching her international allegiance to Nigeria.

She scored her first international goal for the Super Falcons in the closing minutes of the first half, doubling Nigeria's lead after assisting Asisat Oshoala's opener.

Providing match commentary on CAF TV, Oparanozie praised the 27-year-old's composure and decisiveness in front of goal.

"This is what we need in the team. She knew what she wanted to do with the ball," Oparanozie stated.

"She forced her into the defense before she pulled the trigger. She did not think twice. Well done, that is what we need in the team."

Babajide celebrated her goal by mimicking Portuguese forward Diogo Jota's iconic celebration, paying tribute to the Liverpool star.

She was substituted at the start of the second half, with Chinwendu Ihezuo taking her place as Nigeria looked to manage the game and preserve their lead.

The victory places the Super Falcons at the top of Group B with three points and a superior goal difference over Algeria, who managed a narrow 1-0 win against Botswana.

With confidence high and the attacking line clicking, Babajide will hope to maintain her fine form and help Nigeria push toward a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
