'Every goal will matter' – Botswana coach eyes upset in must-win clash against Super Falcons

Botswana coach, Alex Malete has described tomorrow’s crucial clash against Nigeria as a golden opportunity his side cannot afford to squander, as they bid to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Botswana suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Algeria in their opening game of the tournament and now face a must-win encounter against the Super Falcons to keep their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals alive.

Speaking during the pre-match conference, Malete admitted his team did not begin the tournament on a strong note, but believes they are now in the right frame of mind to turn things around.

"Tomorrow's game against Nigeria is an opportunity for us. An opportunity that we cannot afford not to take," Malete said.

"We didn't start the tournament very well. We believe that tomorrow we have to play every moment, every second, from the first minute to the last minute. Something that we didn't do well against Algeria."

Despite the odds, Malete expressed strong optimism that his team has what it takes to advance to the next round.

"We're confident and positive that we can qualify for the quarterfinals. Everyone in the group has a strong belief that we can pull through and make it to the next round.

"Most importantly, we believe in each other and believe in our system and structure."

The coach emphasized that belief within the squad remains stronger than any pressure or doubt, adding that discipline and execution will be key to overcoming a tough Nigerian side.

"The belief is stronger than the pressure and the doubt. So we are confident that should we execute the game plan tomorrow, should we play with heart, desire, commitment, and patience tomorrow, we should be able to get a good result and make the game competitive."

Malete also highlighted the importance of goal difference, stating that his team must remain focused until the final whistle.

"Also, we have to look at other groups and the goal difference. Every goal will matter tomorrow, so we have to keep the game very competitive and finish strongly against Nigeria.

"So we are confident that we will qualify for the quarterfinals," he added.

The Super Falcons will take on the Mares on Thursday, July 10, at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, following their dominant 3-0 win over Tunisia in their opening match.

A win for Nigeria will secure their place in the quarterfinals, while Botswana must avoid defeat to keep their hopes of advancing from Group B alive.
